Allows you to select each camera you wish to view manually or automatically. Switchers simply switch cameras from one camera to the other (similar to how you would select TV channels on your TV), in automatic mode they will select each camera in sequence automatically every few seconds. When connected to a video recorder the video will record whichever camera the switcher has selected or that you manually select.
